Summer Vacation 2011 - Day 5: Monterey Bay

We had a nice break from the car yesterday, but it was back to the car again today. We had a very beautiful scenic drive down Highway 1 along the coast from San Francisco to Monterey, and then on to Pismo Beach. The day started out with fairly limited views of the coast, because of the morning fog that didn’t really burn off very quickly, but it was still beautiful. We stopped in Monterey for Lunch, but skipped the Aquarium as we walked up and down Cannery Row, because the kids decided that it was a great time to start fighting in the parking garage. We went out on the viewing deck behind the aquarium, where we saw some seals on the rocks, and then saw a bunch of dolphins go by in the distance. We bought taffy and fudge at the candy shop, and Lily talked daddy into a trip up and down the glass elevator at Steinbeck square (she became obsessed with public transit in San Francisco, so we thought her interest in the elevator fit right in).

We got back to the car and headed back to Hwy 1. Our kids love to hold their breath when driving through tunnels and on our way out of Monterey, there was a good length of tunnel. As they were holding their breath, the traffic light just passed the end of the tunnel turned red and traffic backed up all the way into the tunnel. We of course got stopped about 4 car lengths from the end. Jerry and I had a fun time watching them pretend to continue holding their breath while we waited for the light to turn green. The kids swear, of course, that they actually held their breath the whole time – didn’t we hear their dramatic exhale as we finally exited?

Our stop for the night was Pismo Beach State Park and another night of camping. I think this is the longest number of consecutive nights I’ve ever camped in.my.whole.life! I don’t think I’m mentioned it before, but I’m not a fan of camping. It’s dirty, uncomfortable, and hard work. But I was being a good sport, I think. The kids were still loving it, and this campsite was just on the other side of the sand dunes from the beach – a fun treat we promised to visit in the morning. It was getting late when we got to Pismo Beach, so we hurried to set up camp quickly, and then went down the street to a diner serving fish and chips, which Jerry had been craving for two days now.
