Summer Vacation 2011 - Day 1: Colorado to Utah

The bad thing about procrastination is that things are rarely done on time. We’ve been so busy with baseball, work, and personal schedules that we found ourselves completely unprepared for vacation as of Thursday night. We got lucky, or so we though, when a storm rolled in and baseball was canceled due to rain and lightning so we took advantage of that and had the kids pack their suitcases. Of course, our luck was short lived when the coaches coordinated make up games for Friday night. It was good though, because it was the game of Tylor vs. Caleb and we didn’t want to miss that game – the boys have been looking forward to it all season, and it was their very last game.

Friday, I had to work, so Jerry was left with a honey-do list about a mile long. Unfortunately, he was unable to get much of it done during the day, so we still had a huge list when I got home. We threw dinner in the oven and set the delay timer so it would be ready when we got home, and then took the boys to their baseball game. When we got home, we found that the dinner didn’t get fully cooked for some reason… not good. It didn’t help that we ran to target for a couple last minute trip items on the way home, so it was already 7:30pm. We usually eat dinner around 5:30pm… bummer. Well the dogs still needed to be dropped off so we loaded back into the car, ran through the McDonalds drive through (yuck) and took the dogs to my moms. When we got home, we still had to check the kids bags and put them to bed.

We spent the next 4 hours making breakfast sandwiches for the morning, making breakfast burritos to warm on the camp fire Sunday morning, packing our suit cases, and packing the van. Finally at 1:30am, I gave up and went to bed. We had already decided I was driving on Saturday so Jerry could take advantage of some extra hours to work, so I really needed to sleep or no amount of coffee was going to do us any good. When the kids started getting up around 7 I got up, warmed up their breakfast sandwiches and started finishing up around the house. I found out then, that Jerry hadn’t made it to bed until 4:30am!

The van was finally loaded with all our stuff, and all our kids and we were able to go get gas, ice, and Starbucks. Then we were finally on the road and it was 9:30am – only half an hour later than we’d hoped to leave, so not too bad.

It was a beautiful drive through the mountains into Utah. Our first stop for the night was the camp grounds in Dinosaur National Monument. The visitor centers were closed so there wasn’t much to check out besides the beautiful views. It was time to set up camp and call it a day.
