Summer Vacation 2011 - Day 4: San Francisco

After 3 consecutive days in the car, we planned to spend the 4th day in San Francisco, since we didn’t get to do or seen anything yesterday. The kids haven’t been to San Francisco, and I’m not sure they knew about all the hills, but they did a great job. It was a warm day, and we did a lot of walking, but they didn’t complain. We got day passes for the public transit, so we got to ride the cable cars. The kids thought that was pretty awesome, especially when a few of them got to stand on the sides. We went to Ghirardelli Square and bought chocolate bars. We had lunch in China town, and bought chopsticks to take home. We walked up the super steep Hyde Street and then down the super twisty Lombard Street and watched the cars come down. We had dinner at Boudin’s (super awesome sourdough!). We walked around the piers, and bought baseball hats and sweatshirts and the souvenir shops. At the end of the day, we got back in the van and decided to try a trip down Lombard Street in our own car. There was a sign prohibiting large vehicles on Hyde Street (I’m guessing because it was so steep that they may not be able to make it up?)  and 8+ passenger vehicles aren’t supposed to go down Lombard street either… but since we saw one just like ours go down, earlier that day, we knew we could make the hairpin turns without getting stuck… fortunately, the streets aren’t patrolled that closely, or we may have gotten ourselves a ticket! We had to try it though, just to say we did J, so don’t tell on us, okay?!?!
