To celebrate the election
being over, meaning Jerry’s responsibilities with the county Republican Party
have come to a major slow down, we escaped to Denver for a relaxing kid free
weekend. We dropped the kids off with
their grandparents on Friday night and headed down to start our weekend with an
improve comedy show at the bar we like to go to for playing pool. We had no
idea they had a basement, let alone a show going on down there on the weekends.
The ticket prices were reasonable and it was only a one drink minimum. The show
was hilarious with a “Who’s line is it anyway” kind of feel. Probably the best
live improve show I’ve ever seen.
It was a cold snowy weekend,
so we did our best to spend most of our time indoors on Saturday and Sunday. We
got a late start to our days, sleeping in and eating breakfast in our room.
Saturday we went to the Denver Art Museum, where we had 12:30 reservations to
view their exclusive Van Gogh exhibit. After the museum, we grabbed a late
lunch and went back to our room and played scrabble. We went back out later,
and wandered around Barnes and Noble which was conveniently located just around
the corner from our hotel, before going to another improve show at a place
called Bovine Metropolis Improve. That show was not all that funny. It was
supposed to be a completely improvised story line based on a suggestion by the
audience, with a Harry Potter theme. It looked and sounded scripted, but maybe
the actors were just that good. We finished off our night with some margaritas
(Lisa – yes they were the same amazing ones as in Ft. Collins I told you about)
and a freezing cold walk back to the hotel.
Sunday wasn’t snowing
anymore, so we wandered out for coffee and to find something to do to kill a
little time since it was too early to pick up the kids, and we didn’t have any
real plans for the day. We ended up on a parade route and watched the Veterans
Day parade through Denver, which was pretty cool. After that, we grabbed some
lunch and then headed to the Museum of Contemporary Art since we have passes.
It’s different every time we go, so it’s fun to see what new exhibits they have
set up. Nothing in particular really grabbed my attention this time, but Jerry
was pretty amused by some poetry translations, and a super old “pick your own
adventure” type computer game.
