I was sitting here on the couch when Caleb quietly came up to me and slyly snuck me a note, he was trying to keep hidden from his sister. He was very serious, and it was clear he didn't want her to see it. I felt like he'd be pretty upset if I opened it right in front of Lily, so respecting his serious attitude, I kept it closed to read after I left the room.
I started to think that maybe it was an apology letter for driving Kelsey crazy while she babysat today. He'd been sent to his room to chill out just before I got home from work, and when I called to him that he could come out, he decided to stay in there. Turns out he was writing me this note. Lily left the room so I opened the note. For whatever reason, as I read the first line, I started thinking that it was a note telling me he was running away. Haha. Not sure where that thought came from, but it must have been his seriousness.
As I kept reading it, I quickly realized that it was a blog post he wanted me to put up for him. He was keeping it a secret from his sister because he felt that she was his biggest competition so far. He was trying to capitalize on the prize money because he had a crap load of DS games to replace since his case and all his games went missing some time around the end of June. He'd been asking who had the most posts, and things like if it would be ok to put some of those game titles on his birthday wishlist so it all kinda clicked.
It made me realize and appreciate how mature he's been about the loss. His DS and games are something that he saved his own money to buy, and he's taken care of them (a stipulation in being allowed to purchase) very well over the last several years. I was actually pretty surprised that he said he couldn't find it and then more surprised that it didn't show up after cleaning the house, his room, and the cars. There was no crying about it, and he continued to actively work towards resolving the issue. He figured out when he last remembered having it. He re-cleaned his room. He called his grandma to see if it was in her camping trailer, or at her house. He came up with ideas to make money so he could work on replacing his games.
I have been very impressed with his attitude and his actions. I feel a bit sad for him that he lost his games, because he has taken very good care of them, but proud of him too.
*UPDATE: Caleb found the DS Games. He was right that he had last seen them when when he went camping with grandma and grandpa for the weekend. Turns out, the game case ended up sliding under the back seat of grandpa's truck, where grandma couldn't see it when she checked for it.
